Norwich — A fire broke out late Wednesday night at the vacant Capehart Mill, along the Shetucket River in Greeneville, fully engulfing the building in flames, police said.

The fire at North Main and 5th streets was reported about 11:37 p.m. Wednesday. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in two hours, then worked to wet down hot spots, the Norwich Fire Department said in a news release.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, police said in a news release.

The Norwich Fire Department said it requested a third alarm after finding the large fire at the Capehart Mill complex, and Taftville, East Great Plain and Laurel Hill departments responded to the scene. The Occum Fire Department assisted with covering Greeneville, and Yantic firefighters covered headquarters during the fire.

Additional units were called from Mohegan, Mashantucket, New London and the Naval Submarine Base in Groton to assist, the Norwich Fire Department said.

The Norwich fire marshal and Norwich Police Department, along with Norwich Public Utilities, Public Works and the city Building Department, also responded, police said.

The site has seen several acts of vandalism and fires over the years. In April 2010, an arson fire destroyed much of the already collapsing main mill complex. Norwich police arrested six people in connection with that blaze, which took three days and 7 million gallons of water to extinguish.
