The NL Community Orchestra presents annual Winter Concert Saturday

New London Community Orchestra music director/conductor Hilarie Clark Moore (Contributed)

The New London Community Orchestra proudly and melodically observes Black History Month with their Winter Concert Saturday at Connecticut College's Evans Hall.

The program features the work of two eminent African American composers, Florence Price and William Grant Still. The ensemble performs Price's tripartite "Dances in the Canebrakes," which was composed for solo piano and later arranged by Still for full orchestra.

Also on the bill are Orpheus in the Underworld Overture by Jacques Offenbach; Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite 1 by Ottorino Respighi; Sergei Prokofiev's Classical Symphony; and Alexander Borodin's Polovtsian Dances from Act II of the Opera Prince Igor.

Proceeds from the concert benefit the Music City Strings Youth Players, the free music lessons outreach program offered at the Public Library of New London and operated by the New London Community Orchestra.

The New London Community Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Evans Hall, Connecticut College, 270 Mohegan Ave., New London; $10 donation; (860) 608-1780, nlcommunityorchestra.org.
