Ben Ottewell, Ian Ball play Kate Dec. 1

Ben Ottewell, right, and Ian Ball (Submitted)

One of the problems with living long enough is that you begin to develop unbidden name associations.

Consider the British indie band Gomez, for example, which won the 1998 Mercury Prize for their "Bring It On" album. Theirs is a relatively distinctive sound, with a bluesy underpinning not typically associated with that era of indie rock. Personally, though, I can't hear Gomez without thinking of ... Ken Weatherwax!

    Who?!

Y'see, Ken Weatherwax was the chubby child actor who played Pugsley in the 1960s TV series "The Addams Family," a macabre clan whose patriarch was Gomez Addams (deliciously portrayed by John Astin). So, when I see the name "Gomez," "The Addams Family" comes to mind — but the association instantly boomerangs from Astin's Gomez to Pugsley/Weatherwax. I don't know why. It's just one of those weird things that happens when your brain starts rotting.

The whole point of this? Gomez guitarists/vocalists Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball are touring as a duo and stop by the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center for a performance Dec. 1. Expect plenty of Gomez tunes, some solo stuff and works-in-progress — but probably not the soundtrack song to "The Addams Family."

Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $27; (860) 510-0453. thekate.org.
