Police seek 'armed and dangerous' man in connection with 2017 New London homicide

New London — Police on Friday said they secured an active arrest warrant in a December fatal shooting, for a man they said should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police in a news release alleged Jamir Johnson, 18, of no certain address is responsible for the murder of Quvonte Andre Gray, 21, who died of a gunshot wound on Dec. 9, 2017, at 4 Orchard St.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide, and police said Friday that further investigation allegedly revealed Johnson as the shooter.

Johnson faces charges of murder, possession of a pistol without a permit and unlawful discharge of a firearm. Bond was set at $1.5 million dollars, police said.

Police said Johnson should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police said Gray, a Florida resident, frequently visited New London and stayed in the city for extended periods.

Police found Gray with a gunshot wound to the head in a basement apartment at 4 Orchard St. shortly after 3:15 p.m. on Dec. 9. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. At the time, police said the public was not at risk in the aftermath of the shooting.

Gray's death came on a December weekend that saw two shooting incidents and a stabbing in three days.

Even before police identified Gray as the victim, they said they were looking to question Johnson. At the time, police Chief Peter Reichard said officers gathered solid information from witnesses, but believed Johnson could help detectives determine exactly what happened.

Police previously arrested Johnson on a charge of second-degree breach of peace on Oct. 24, 2017. He was released on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on that charge on June 12.

New London police detectives, the Connecticut State Police-Eastern District Major Crime Squad and the New London state attorney's office investigated Gray's homicide.

Anyone with information concerning Johnson or his whereabouts should contact New London police at (860) 447-5269, ext. 0, and/or the nearest law enforcement agency. Anonymous tips can be submitted by texting NLPDTip plus the information to 847411. Police noted that hindering prosecution is a felony criminal charge.
