    Ever-changing Sun return home Saturday

Mohegan — It’s been over two weeks since the Connecticut Sun played at Mohegan Sun Arena and much has happened to them.

Here, then, is a list of the Sun's changes headed into Saturday night’s home game against the Atlanta Dream:

    • Alex Bentley: Temporarily gone. She’s training with the Belarus national team in preparations for this month’s FIBA EuroBasket Women’s tournament, a qualifier for next year’s World Championships.

    • Morgan Tuck: Injured. The team’s second-leading scorer has missed the last two games due to a bone bruise in her knee and has the nebulous “day-to-day” diagnosis.

    • Jordan Hooper: Traded. The Sun sent the reserve forward Thursday to, coincidentally enough, Atlanta for a 2018 second-round draft pick.

    • Feyonda Fitzgerald: Brand-new. The rookie point guard was signed Thursday to fill the vacancy left by Bentley.

Connecticut has other nagging ailments that are commonplace in professional sports, most especially when it comes to the star-crossed Sun.

“I’m going to try to walk in front of a bus on the way out of here,” Connecticut head coach and general manager Curt Miller quipped. “I’d fit in.”

The Sun (2-5) return home having won twice on their three-game road trip. They had a chance to sweep as they led the Washington Mystics by nine points with over four minutes left in their game May 31, but lost 78-76.

Three of Connecticut’s five losses have been by two points.

“We just need to learn to win close games and that will be a learned process,” Miller said. “We have great balance in the scoring. Our leading scorer (Jonquel Jones) scores less than 14 points a game (13.7). We have a lot of scorers between 14 and 8, and so it’s great for 35 minutes. But for the last five minutes, who are you going to play through? Who are you going to get that big basket from? It’s very important to learn that and put yourself in position to win those games in those last five minutes.”

Connecticut will be down two starters without Bentley (off-guard) and Tuck (forward). Bentley will be gone for three weeks as the EuroBasket tournament runs from June 16-25.

Miller said they’ve watched film and haven’t found when Tuck injured her knee. She’s averaged 11.8 points and made 40 percent of her 3-point field goals.

Second-year guard Courtney Williams will start in place of Bentley. Shekinna Stricklen has started the last two games at forward.

“It’s the next person up,” Miller said. “We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. The league is not going to feel sorry for us with all the injuries that are mounting and the changes that we’ve had to make.”

Trading Hooper was one of those changes. Miller said they hope to sign someone in time to contribute for next Wednesday’s home game against the New York Liberty, and that they’d like to that player to give them more athleticism.

“We were presented with multiple offers for Jordan,” Miller said. “As we build for the future, we have a bullseye on the 2018 and 2019 seasons. It was going to give us an asset (in the draft).”

Fitzgerald was taken 20th overall (second round) by the Indiana Fever in April’s draft and was the team’s last cut. She finished her career at Temple as the all-time career leader in assists (635) and ranked second in career points (1,824).

“She’s a shifty, change-of-pace, very fast point guard,” Miller said. “We really wanted, while Alex was gone, to bring someone in who helps with our athleticism.”
