State poet laureate visits La Grua
King Henry I paid Geoffrey Chaucer 10 shillings a year to be England’s poet laureate in the 14th century. That seems like a billion rhyme-schemes ago!
Here in Connecticut, we’ve had eight poets laureate starting with William Meredith in 1985. The latest is Antoinette Brim-Bell, who appears Saturday at the La Grua Center in Stonington. A firm believer in the power of written and spoken words to bring about social change, Brim-Bell has published three collections, “These Women You Gave Me,” “Icarus in Love” and “Psalm of the Sunflower.”
Her work has also appeared in numerous journals, textbooks, compilations and anthologies, and she’s also a renowned visual artist, an educator and public speaker, and the former host of a series of Black History Month television programs for the OneWorld Progressive Institute.
