Coast Guard Band performs holiday concert on Sunday

I must take exception with something in a recent press release from the United States Coast Guard Band. The bulletin, advancing their always superb annual Holiday Concert Sunday in Leamy Hall in New London, says the performance will close with – and I quote – “everyone’s favorite festive winter classic … ‘Sleigh Ride.’”

Look: it’ll be an excellent concert and the program includes Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Jesters,” Styne’s “Christmas Waltz” and Gorb’s “Yiddish Dances.” Those are followed by such fare as “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Let It Snow” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Fantastic!

But is “Sleigh Ride” really everyone’s favorite? Keep in mind that A) it’s the song where every version has those stupid CLIP-CLOP fake horse-hooves sound effects and B) Farmer Gray didn’t invite me to his birthday party and C) not once in my life has a friend attempted to get my attention by calling, “Yoo hoo!”

Still, I suspect the Coast Guard Band’s version of “Sleigh Ride” will be the best rendition ever and a perfect conclusion to a wonderful holiday concert. It’s what they do! And at least that goofy “I Saw Three Ships” isn’t all the bill.

United States Coast Guard Band, 2 p.m. Sunday, Leamy Hall, United States Coast Guard Academy, 15 Mohegan Ave., New London; free; (860) 701-6826, uscg.mil/community/band.
