Jiayan Sun featured in La Grua concert

    Jiayan Sun (submitted)

One of the great things about baseball is how each team’s ballpark has its own physical dimensions that play into the dynamics of the game. Boston’s Fenway Park, for perhaps the most obvious example, has an outfield with the Green Monster in left and the “triangle” in deep center. The Red Sox outfielder who can negotiate these features has a nice homefield advantage.

No baseball stadiums in Stonington Borough, but the La Grua Center, the pan-arts facility, has something truly special in terms of a homefield distinction: the 1886 Chickering concert grand piano.

Under the nuanced fingertips of gifted pianists like Jiayan Sun, the Chickering helps deliver distinctive and lovely concerts. On Saturday, in the latest of La Grua’s Music Matters series, Sun will deliver a program of Chopin material titled “Mazurkas, Préludes & a Polonaise.” Sun is a longtime La Grua favorite, but his previous visits have been as part of duo formats; this will be his first solo concert and it should be truly special.

Jiayan Sun, 5 p.m. Saturday, Music Matters, La Grua Center, 32 Water St., Stonington; $20 advance, $25 door; (860) 535-2300, lagruacenter.org.
