Prolific author Stephen Dobyns reads at first Beer & Books event

Anyone who's ever written a grocery list — much less a newspaper or magazine article or, jeez, a book — is probably astounded by the efforts of Westerly author Stephen Dobyns. He's incredibly prolific, with 13 poetry collections, 13 standalone novels, and 10 mysteries in the Charlie Bradshaw series. Oh, and don't forget those two essay compilations.

So, yes, the dude can type.

What's very compelling is how exceedingly fine Dobyns is in all of these styles and genres. It makes one wonder: how does Dobyns decide, on any given morning, what he's going to work on?

Well, for the past few years, he's been writing "Is Fat Bob Dead Yet?" It's an evocative, fluidly crafted, shocking and oft-hilarious comic thriller set — yes! — in New London.

Hailed exuberantly by Stephen King, "Is Fat Bob Dead Yet?" was published earlier this week and, in thirsty celebration, Dobyns appears Wednesday at the Cottrell Brewery in Pawcatuck. It's the launch of a new "Beer & Books" series co-sponsored by Cottrell and the noble folks at Mystic's Bank Square Books.

Hear Dobyns read, shake his hand, get him to autograph your copy — and sample free craft beers. Hell, take home a growler or two along with "Is Fat Bob Dead Yet?"

Stephen Dobyns at "Beer & Books," 6 p.m. Wednesday, Cottrell Brewery, 100 Mechanic St. #22, Pawcatuck; free; (860) 536-3795.
