Mystic Seaport's Lantern Light Tours returns
Whether it be through gift giving, cooking casseroles, baking cookies, picking out a tree or lighting a menorah, it’s that time of year again, the time to get into the holiday spirit. In that vein, the Mystic Seaport will be making its own mark on the holiday season with its Lantern Light Tours — the annual December traveling play that promises to warm the hearts of those who partake. This year, the show is aptly titled “The Spirit of the Holiday: A Christmas Ghost Story.”
With this in mind, the seaport isn’t wasting any time. Tomorrow, the day after Thanksgiving, the first tour of the season will launch promptly at 5 p.m. Customary to years past (this will be the 38th annual tour), there will be a new script. Written by Rebecca Donohue, head costumer of the Mystic Seaport’s Interpretation Department, the story, which is set on Christmas Eve in 1876, promises hilarity while showcasing holiday traditions such as a spirited circle dance. And what’s a good story without some added drama? That will come in the form of a Victorian spiritualist, who we think, based on the title of the show, could conjure some ghosts along the way.
Each performance will cover a half-mile of uneven terrainm ranging from cobblestones to wood planks. Audience members are expected to walk and stand throughout the duration of the show and are encouraged to wear appropriate outerwear and shoes. The show will last 70 minutes and is not recommended for children under the age of 4.
