Author Kelly Braffet signs fantasy novel Thursday at Savoy Bookshop

You remember how it was when Ken Griffey, Jr., was chasing his Ol' Man's home run totals? I mean, Dad had a very good career, with 152 dingers. And it was very early on in Junior's time in the bigs that he caught up, on his way to 630 total round-trippers. But it was still exciting.

I sometimes think about this when I ponder the number of books Stephen King has written — 63 as of this week — compared with the number penned by his wife, sons, and daughter-in-law. All of them will eventually catch him at some point, and the fine novelist Kelly Braffet, who's married to Big Steve's son Owen, has just published her fourth book, "The Unwilling." Based on an idea she had 20 years ago in college, "The Unwilling" is Braffet's first fantasy novel and is getting excellent advance reviews.

Meet Braffet Thursday in Westerly's Savoy Bookshop and Cafe when she signs copies and discusses her work with local author Christa Carmen.

Kelly Braffet, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Savoy Bookshop and Cafe, 10 Canal St., Westerly; free; (401) 213-3901.
