    H.S. roundup: Old Lyme girls advance to Shoreline semis

    Durham — The Old Lyme girls' basketball team turned the tables on Coginchaug as the No. 5 Wildcats avenged a regular-season loss with a 47-40 win in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament on Saturday.

    Old Lyme plays No. 1 East Hampton in the semifinals at Coginchaug on Tuesday. Old Lyme (14-7) lost to Coginchaug 58-31 on Jan. 27.

    "Defensively we were excellent tonight,'' said Old Lyme coach Don Bugbee. "We came to play tonight and the last time we did not. We didn't do anything different tonight.''

    Sam Gray scored 19 points and had seven rebounds and Emily DeRoehn had nine points, eight rebounds and seven steals for Old Lyme.

    "We had people contributing all over the place,'' said Bugbee. "Just a solid team effort tonight and I'm very happy for them.''

    In other games:

    • Arianna Garcia scored 21 points as fourth-seeded Bullard-Havens defeated No. 4 Norwich Tech 54-29 in the Connecticut Technical Conference tournament quarterfinals. Geovonna Taitague scored nine points for the Warriors (11-10) while Ashlyn Bill had 14 rebounds and four blocked shots.

    Wrestling

    • Theran Vanase reached the final at 170 as Norwich Free Academy finished seventh in the Class LL meet at Trumbull with 102 points. Danbury won the title with 269. Vanase was pinned by top-seeded Thomas Mazur of Westhill in 2:20. Also for the Wildcats, Connor DeVega (126) and Christian Gervais (195) finished fifth while Jaiden James (106) and Mason McMahon (182) placed sixth.

    • Jadian Mackenzie reached the 195-pound final and New London had five place-winners to finish 10th in the Class M meet at Guilford. Mackenzie was pinned by top-seeded Carson LiCastri of Barlow in 2:37. The Whalers had 104 points as Keeano Gonzalez (285) placed fourth, Tristen Robledo-Thompson (113), Noah Boozer (145) and Teshua Williams (220) each placed fifth.

    Waterford, which finished 14th with 80 points, had a pair of finalists in Mason Concascia (120) and Jackson Harshberger (182), who both lost by pin. Suffield/Windsor Locks won the team title with 187 points, 5.5 better than Foran.

    • East Lyme/Norwich Tech's Roark Ryan (220) finished second in the Class L meet at Bristol Central, losing a 3-2 decision to No. 1 Joshua Foote of Amity in the final. Jeremiah Irizary (113) and Corey Filewich (182) each added sixth-place finishes for the Vikings, who were 11th overall with 68.5 points, while Fitch was 12th with 64 points and had two place-winners — Melakai Maddox (third at 145) and Naszier Matthews (sixth at 160). Xavier edges Simsbury 243-240.5 for the team title.

    Cheerleading

    • NFA won the Division I title and overall championship during the ECC Championship meet at Waterford. The Wildcats scored an overall total of 164, the best of the day among all the ECC schools. They were followed by East Lyme (159.4) and Fitch (142.95) in Divsion I, while Waterford won the Division II title with 163 followed by Killingly (162.9) and Bacon Academy (103.1), and Montville won the Division III crown with 131.85 points followed by Griswold (117.8) and Plainfield (115.95).

    Girls' fencing

    • Waterford swept the titles at the ECC tournament, winning foil and epee, and had both individual champions. Willow Yang of Waterford won the foil, edging out teammate Alex Cole, and Melissa Vine won epee with teammate Jenna Morin. NFA earned the other two ECC all-stars spots in foil, with Amy Contreras taking third and Raven Wawrzynowicz fourth. Ellen McIntyre of Bacon Acsemy was third in epee, followed by Julia Zieminski of Fitch.

    Boys' fencing

    • Fitch's Gabe Reigelsperger won the epee title as the Falcons the team titles in epee and foil at the ECC tournament. Jacob Ewen of NFA took the title in foil. Also making the ECC all-star team in foil were Ben Traverso of Fitch (second), Adam Bryant of New London (third) and Nolan Deschenes of East Lyme (fourth). Hashin Crosland of Waterford was second in epee, followed by Zeb Carty of NFA and Alric Anderson of East Lyme.

    H.S. hockey

    • Will Cannella scored with seven seconds left in regulation as the Eastern CT Eagles beat Wethersfield/Middletown/Rocky Hill/Portland 3-2. Evan Tower and Steve Turchetta had goals, Wes Williamson made 41 saves, Turchetta had two assists and Kyle Marino, Ryan LoVetere, Cannella and Tower had assists for the Eagles (9-9).
