    H.S. roundup: Fitch girls beat NFA 45-41 for seventh straight victory

    Groton — Surging Fitch won its seventh straight game with a 45-41 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I girls' basketball victory over Norwich Free Academy on Saturday.

    The Falcons (9-3, 3-1) were fresh off a 42-31 division win over East Lyme less than 24 hours earlier.

    Mariette El Khoury led Fitch's balanced attack with 11 points and six rebounds while Rita Sefransky added 10 points and six rebounds, Grace Jenkins had eight points and six rebounds, Laura Johnson six points and seven rebounds, and Dre'Ana Singleton six points and five assists.

    Ashlinn Richmond scored 12 points for lead the Wildcats (1-10, 0-3).

    In other games:

    • Kate Walsh scored 13 points as Old Lyme rolled to a 36-18 victory over Old Saybrook in the Shoreline Conference. Megan Loflin added 16 rebounds, four steals and four blocks while Ali Kyle had eight points and seven steals and Ava Roth had seven rebounds for the Wildcats (5-4, 3-4). Breleigh Cooke scored 11 points for Old Saybrook.

    • Lyman Memorial also won for the second time in less than 24 hours with a 45-33 non-conference win over Windham Tech on Friday. The Bulldogs (6-5) led 30-12 at halftime and were led by freshman Phoebe Carpenter's 18 points, eight rebounds, five steals and five blocked shots. Jenn Lopez added 12 points, four assists and three steals while Kasey Cook had 10 points and Kassidy LaTour eight assists and four steals.

    • Lyman defeated Putnam 40-19 in an ECC Division IV game on Thursday night, coming up with 23 steals and nine blocks. Lopez scored 11 points for the Bulldogs (3-1 in the division) while Cook had nine points, six rebounds and six steals, LaTour had eight steals and four blocks and Carpenter had four blocks.

    Boys' basketball

    • Evan Merchant scored a career-high 27 points as Griswold defeated Plainfield 54-43 in an ECC Division III game. Michael Strain added 10 points and four steals for the Wolverines (2-5, 1-1) while Tyler Nordstrom scored 22 points for Plainfield (1-6, 0-4).

    • Sean O'Connell had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Waterford past Killingly, 42-35. Logan Peabody added 13 points and four steals for the Lancers (9-3) while Yianni Baribeau had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Killingly (6-4).

    • Dorian White had 18 points and six assists as Stonington rolled to an 80-63 non-conference win over Old Saybrook. Nate Cyr added 17 for the Bears (6-3) while Luke Lowry had 12 points and Cam Hinchey 10.

    • St. Bernard bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 79-52 win over Woodstock Academy in an ECC Division II game. The Saints (10-1, 4-1) lost at Ledyard on Friday night, 74-70. Dorell Cagle led the Colonels with 27 points and seven rebounds while Caden Whipple had 14 points and seven assists and Ryan Outlow 12 points and 10 rebounds.

    • Putnam outlasted Lyman Memorial 55-52 in overtime in an ECC Division IV game on Friday night where the Bulldogs played most of the overtime with only four players due to injuries and having three players foul out, including Jaiden Lopez (15 points) and Jordan Chandler (12). Lyman is 1-10, 1-3.

    Wrestling

    • Host NFA finished third in the Carl Snitkin Memorial Duals, defeating Notre Dame of West Haven 40-36 in the consolation final after going 2-1 in the round robin portion, defeating Ellis Tech (53-17) and Law (60-24) while losing to No. 6 Staples (47-33). Staples won the final with a 39-36 win over RHAM. Zaire Wallace, Connor DeVega, Jaiden James, Tommy Brunelli and Francisco Lugo Del Toro all went 4-0 for the Wildcats (10-5) with Wallace, DeVega, James and Brunelli recording three pins apiece.

    • Ledyard also competed, going 1-3. The Colonels (10-5) defeated Ellis Tech (48-36) while losing to Killingly (54-27), RHAM (45-33) and Notre Dame (39-34). Connor Doran (132/138) went 4-0 with two pins for the Colonels and earned the 100th win of his career while Linda Holeman (132) went 3-0.

    • Fitch finished ninth at the Colby Abely Midseason Classic at Xavier. The Falcons had 91 points and host Xavier won with 234.5. Fitch's Cal Muese lost the 220 final to Xavier's Thomas Lunt, 6-4, while Lucas Ursini (113) placed third and John Luethy (182) fourth. 

    • In addition, East Lyme/Norwich Tech's Lincoln Carson (126) finished second and Brayden Soleau (152) third. The Vikings also went 2-1 at the Avon Duals on Friday, defeating Farmington (48-33) and Gilbert (66-12) while losing to Avon (50-28). Carlson, Mike Minevich (138) and Soleau (152) all went 3-0.

    Hockey

    • Lyman Hall scored four goals in the first period on the way to a 6-1 win over the Eastern CT Eagles in Norwich. Gavin Casagrande of Fitch scored an unassisted goal for the Eagles (4-6) and goalie Cam McCollum of East Lyme made 21 saves.
