Groton — Hollis Scott doesn't merely get history lessons in class at Fitch High School. He hears them from his dad, too. That's because Mike Scott, a member of the undefeated 1994 team, remains one of the elite running backs in school history.

"My dad is always telling me how nasty his teams were," Hollis Scott said through a grin Friday night.

The Falcons of 2017 may not yet qualify as "nasty." They'll just have to settle for "undefeated."

They remained that way after the younger Scott ran for 181 yards and three scores (one on defense) helping Fitch to a 28-6 win over Montville at Dorr Field.

Fitch (3-0) has a September showdown with undefeated Norwich Free Academy next week.

"NFA is a very good team," Hollis Scott said. "We really have to make sure we stay focused all week."

For now, though, they can appreciate taking down the Indians (2-1) and enjoying a week knowing they'll play in the region's feature game.

"Our first game (a win over Westerly), it was Kennard (Tate) who made the big play," Fitch coach Mike Ellis said. "Last week against Notre Dame, it was Tyler (Nelli) and Hamear (Stephens). Tonight it was Hollis. The kids have to understand that teams are going to take things way, but we have to go with it and see what works that night. It has to be a team thing."

Scott was a co-star on the night to Justice Farris, whose first of two interceptions turned around the game. Montville was leading 6-0 and driving in the first half before Farris' pickoff ignited 28 straight points.

"Justice was in a dogfight with the receiver, but got in great position," Ellis said. "He has a knack for being in the right spot."

Montville coach Tanner Grove lamented the play as well. But for a different reason.

"The reason we threw there is because it was third and seven, not third and two," Grove said. "It was third and seven because we had an improperly diagnosed penalty on us (too many men in the backfield) the play before. The officials did a great job all night. They're human. I got an apology. But that turnover really hurt us."

Scott scored on touchdown runs of 30 and 43 yards. His scoop and score late in the first half, though, might have been the dagger. Zach Letellier's sack of quarterback Luke Hall led to the loose ball that Scott ran home.

"Huge," Ellis said.

"When Fitch goes up by two scores with the way they run their offense," Grove said, "that's pretty much all she wrote."

Hall hit Gennaro Davis with a 30-yard touchdown pass on fourth and 10 for Montville's lone score. Davis deftly caught the pass one-handed.
