    H.S. soccer: No. 1 Stonington boys advance in ECC D-I tourney

    Stonington — Junior Tyler Fidrych scored two goals to ignite a second-half outburst as top-seeded Stonington High School defeated No. 8 Fitch 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I boys' soccer tournament Friday.

    The score stood at 0-0 at halftime before the Bears broke it open. Jamison Magowan set up both of Fidrych's goals. Jake O'Keefe closed out the scoring with an assist from Cooper Wall. Goalie Peter Fernholz made four saves while posting the shutout.

    Stonington (16-1) advanced to play No. 4 Woodstock Academy, a 1-0 overtime winner over No. 5 Bacon Academy, in Tuesday's semifinals at New London at 7 p.m. The other semifinal will pit No. 2 East Lyme against No. 3 Ledyard at 4:30 p.m. 

    Fitch fell to 6-10-1.

    In other Division I boys' games:

    • Alec Kosinski set up Duncan Manthous for a goal less than a minute into the match and No. 2 East Lyme went on to rout No. 7 Norwich Free Academy 4-0 in the Division I quarterfinals. Kosinski also scored a goal for the Vikings (13-3-1), while Kurt Mahlke and Robby Swenson each scored a goal, Finn Power had two assists and Matt Kung one assist. Troy Mauer stopped 11 shots in goal for NFA, which finished 3-12-2.

    • No. 3 Ledyard scored a goal in each half to eliminate No. 6 Waterford 2-0 in the quarterfinals. Daimon Pollard, assisted by Fabian May, scored in the first for the Colonels (12-5) and Nick Washington drilled a 25-yard shot off the inside far post in the 51st minute. Goalie Ken Turner stopped eight shots to earn the shutout while A.J. Sachatello made seven saves for Waterford, which finished 5-11-1.

    Division II boys

    • Fourth-seeded Montville broke open a close game with two quick goals to start the second half as the Indians defeated No. 5 St. Bernard 3-0 in the quarterfinals. After Jack Minas gave Montville (13-4) a 1-0 halftime lead, Tyler Velazquez scored three minutes into the second half and Jack Varley struck seven minutes later. Jacob Rose, Aaron Muncaster and Julian Valdes had assists for the Indians while goalie Keaton Sulman made two saves for his 10th shutout. Montville will play top-seeded Lyman Memorial, a 7-1 winner over No. 8 Plainfield, in Tuesday's semifinals at Lyman at 7 p.m. Martin Arvidson made seven saves in goal for St. Bernard (11-6).

    • Junior Kayden Rose's second-half goal, the first of his career, lifted No. 3 Wheeler past No. 6 Griswold 1-0 and handed the Lions their first-ever ECC tournament win. Wheeler (11-6) advanced to play No. 2 Windham, a 5-0 winner over No. 7 Tourtellotte, in Tuesday's Division II semifinals at Lyman Memorial at 4:30 p.m. Bowen Baker made four saves to earn the shutout and Ian Spracklin added an assist.

    Division I girls

    • No. 3 NFA cruised to a 3-0 quarterfinal victory over No. 6 Bacon. Kayla Park, MacKenzie Teper and Hannah Daniewicz scored goals for the Wildcats (10-5-2), who play No. 2 Woodstock Academy in the semifinals on Tuesday at Waterford at 4:30 p.m. Woodstock ousted No. 7 East Lyme 3-1. Top-seeded Plainfield, a 3-1 winner over No. 8 Ledyard, will play No. 4 Killingly, a 2-1 winner over No. 5 Waterford, in the second semifinal at 7.

    Division II girls

    • Lauren Velazquez had four goals and an assist to highlight top-seeded Montville's 8-0 win over No. 8 New London in the Division II quarterfinals. Alexis DeLucia added three goals for the Indians (13-4), who play No. 4 Lyman Memorial in Tuesday's semifinals at Montville at 4:30 p.m. Lyman beat No. 5 St. Bernard 1-0. Olivia Meehan added three assists for the Indians while Kiera MacCracken scored a goal and Kara and Julia Beaupre each added assists. Cassandra Roman stopped 11 shots for the Whalers, who finish 5-12.

    • Vanessa Benjamin scored a pair of goals as No. 2 Stonington rolled to a 6-0 win over No. 7 Griswold in the Division II quarters. Megan Detwiler added a goal and an assist for the Bears (12-4-1), while Holly Foster, Jessica Detwiler and Emma Sabbadini each scored a goal, Amelia Caron had two assists and Rachel Sabbadini added an assist. Stonington will play No. 3 Tourtellotte, a 5-0 winner over No. 6 Putnam, in Tuesday's semifinals at Montville at 7 p.m.
