    Haunted by fate

“One of us is going to the Thresher,” said David Cornell in an interview with The Day, “Mystic submariner haunted by fateful Navy orders issued 58 years ago,” (March 28). But it was not Cornell, but his shipmate, Robert William Gaynor who would get orders to the nuclear submarine, USS Thresher (SSN-593), and go down with the ship that fateful day on April 10, 1963.

I am reminded that one of my own shipmates, who was also assigned to the fleet oiler, USS Mispillion (AO-105), reflected on the Thresher many years later. Eugene Carkoski told me that his brother Richard James Carkoski, Engineman First Class, had orders to the Thresher and was lost at sea. Who would have thought it would come to this?
