East Lyme-New London water interconnection put to use

East Lyme — New London sent water to East Lyme for the first time over Labor Day weekend to alleviate East Lyme’s water shortage, said First Selectman Paul Formica at Wednesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting.

The town has been testing the new system all summer, but the long holiday weekend was the first time the new regional water interconnection was put to the test. Formica reported that the system worked with no issues.

The regional water interconnection, a $10.9 million project approved by the town in 2011, allows the town to draw water from New London during the dry summer months. During the cooler months, the interconnection will allow East Lyme to bank its water in New London.

Construction this year hadn’t been finished in time to allow the town to send water to store in New London, so the two communities executed an agreement that enabled the town this year to draw water from New London over the weekends from mid-May to mid-September, as needed.
