Stonington school board to hold Dec. 11 meeting on middle school consolidation plan

Stonington -- The Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Monday, Dec. 11, concerning the potential consolidation of the town’s two middle schools.

The school board is considering a proposal to close Pawcatuck Middle School and consolidate it with Mystic Middle School. The new school would be located at Mystic Middle School.

At the Dec. 11 meeting at 6 p.m. in the Stonington High School commons, the board will present a short summary of the proposal followed by a question and answer session.

The consolidation is being proposed because it is projected that enrollment at both schools will continue to decline. Mystic is being planned as the site for the combined schools because it is larger than Pawcatuck.

With the consolidation, the town would save up to $1 million a year by reducing administrative, custodial and clerical positions. The influx of teachers from Pawcatuck would allow the school system to offer more academic programs and extracurricular activities.
