New London firefighters award youth with $8,000 in scholarships

New London — The New London Firefighter’s Union has handed out eight $1,000 scholarships to local seniors from The Dr. Carl Wies Scholarship Trust.

The scholarship was established in the 1980s to honor Weis, a New London resident and physician who died in 1986, and was renowned for his community involvement and charitable nature. A graduate of Yale School of Medicine and a World War II physician, he continued to practice medicine in New London for 50 years. He was known for making house calls, providing free care to those unable to pay and responding to calls for help at all hours and in all weather.

Wies also regularly responded to fire scenes. Donning a helmet and coat, he brought oxygen, splints, bandages and more to provide immediate treatment. To the firefighters, he was known as “the night angel.”

The New London Firefighters Union awarded scholarships in his name to students based on individual essays, significant community involvement, charitable service and academic achievement.

Scholarship recipients are: Androse Bazil, Adeliz Cordero, Adriana Diaz and Nichole Roman from New London; Waterford seniors Logan Bowdish and Kaylee Wilcox; and East Lyme seniors Savannah Hunter and Claire Mason.

The scholarship is made possible through contributions of New London area residents and businesses.
