Stonington school board approves 2.5% budget increase

Stonington — The Board of Education on Thursday night approved a proposed 2021-22 budget of $38.3 million that shows a 2.5% increase.

Superintendent of Schools Van Riley originally presented a $41.6 million budget with an 8.9% increase, which the board and Riley then cut to 4.8%. Two weeks ago, the board deadlocked on a vote to approve the budget after some members expressed concern about the increase.

On Thursday night, Riley presented the board with an additional $864,3406 in cuts, mostly in health care costs and staffing, leaving a budget increase of $934,495.

The school board now will forward its budget proposal to the Board of Finance, which had told the school board to limit its increase to 1.5%.
