    Local roundup: CGA, Conn men move into Div. III national lacrosse rankings

    New London — The Coast Guard Academy's men's lacrosse team earned its first national ranking in program history on Monday.

    The Bears, who are off to a 4-0 start and freshman of a 10-9 overtime upset of then No. 2 Wesleyan, were ranked 16th in the weekly U.S. Lacrosse Magazine Division III weekly rankings. Connecticut College, which is also off to a perfect start (3-0), is ranked No. 18.

    Both schools have games on Tuesday. Coast Guard plays Ithaca College in Virginia Beach (Va.) while Conn College plays Transylvania at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

    WNBA draft

    • The WNBA announced it will hold its 2018 draft at the Nike New York Headquarters on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. The first round be televised live on ESPN2 while rounds two and three will move over toe ESPNU at 8.

    The Las Vegas Aces, formerly the San Antonio Stars, hold the No. 1 pick followed by the Indiana Pacers and Chicago Sky, who hold the third and fourth picks. The Connecticut Sun have a pick in each round — the No. 9 pick in the first round, the No. 3 pick in the second round and the No. 9 pick in the third round.

    A pair of UConn seniors, Kia Nurse and Gabby Williams, are expected to go in the first round.

    H.S. swimming

    • The CIAC has postponed Tuesday's Class M and Class S state championship meets to Wednesday. The two meets were originally scheduled to be held at Wesleyan University in Middletown, but now will take place at the Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford. The Class M meet will be held at 1:30 p.m., with the Class S meet to follow at 6.

    Honors

    • Norwich Free Academy was named winner of the 2017-18 CAS-CIAC Battle of the Fans competition. Members of the NFA student section will be honored with a plaque and recognition during one of the basketball state championship games at Mohegan Sun Arena either March 17 and 18. The competition is designed to recognized student cheering sections that demonstrated sportsmanship, school spirit, originality, and student section leadership through student-submitted videos. The finalists were NFA and Immaculate of Danbury.

    • Mitchell College senior Kyle Hartenstein was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in baseball. Hartenstein batted a team-high .522 last week as the Mariners (8-1) went 5-0 to close out their annual Florida trip. He had multiple hits in all five games, including three hits against both Heidelberg and Husson. He scored a run in all five games and totaled nine for the week. He also finished with three stolen bases and two RBI.

    • Coast Guard sophomore Riley McNulty and junior Trey Johnson swept the weekly New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference weekly awards in men's lacrosse. McNulty was named Offensive Player of the Week after finishing the week with nine points in two games, including four goals in the Bears' overtime win over Wesleyan. Johnson, a goalie, was named Defensive Player of the Week after making 15 saves in two games, including 11 in the win over Wesleyan.
