    Local roundup: Perez lifts Tigers to victory

    Auburn, N.Y. — Wencell Perez hit a two-run homer in the top of the third inning and the Connecticut Tigers beat the Auburn Doubledays 2-0 in the New York-Penn League on Sunday.

    Four pitchers combined to pitch a six-hitter for the Tigers (20-20). Starter Jose Vasquez (4-1) got the win, allowing four hits over six innings with five strikeouts and two walks. Arvicent Perez and Dylan Stock got holds with one inning each of one-hit ball and Drew Crosby earned his first save with a hitless ninth. Alexis Garcia singled and tripled for Connecticut.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Waterford beat Groton 3-2 to even the best-of-three finals at 1-1. The title will be decided on Tuesday, with Game 3 at Washington Park in Groton starting at 5:45 p.m. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Waterford's Nick Zanghetti led off with a double and scored on Colin Carofano's RBI single two outs later.

    Jordon Hancock earned the win, allowing four hits with eight strikeouts over six innings. Bret Wood pitched a hitless seventh for a save. Clancy Susi and Hancock had doubles for Waterford. Darius Armadore pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts for Groton and teammates Jordan Lowell, who doubled, and Kyle Egan drove in runs.

    • Two pitchers from the Mystic Schooners pitched scoreless innings to help the South to a 4-3 win in the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game at Holyoke, Mass. Chris Troye (UC Santa Barbara) struck out two in the second inning and Thomas Girard (Duke) struck out one in the eighth, as neither allowed a hit.

    Sebastiano Santorelli of the Schooners (Seton Hall) singled, scored a run and stole a base and Mystic's Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) won the 60-yard dash before the game.
