    Local roundup: Fitch, East Lyme advance to ECC D-I volleyball semifinals

    Groton — Fourth-seeded Fitch made quick work of No. 5 Norwich Free Academy in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I volleyball tournament quarterfinals, defeating the Wildcats 26-24, 25-22 and 25-18 on Saturday.

    The Falcons (12-7) will host No. 1 Woodstock Academy, the top-ranked team in the state poll, in Monday's semifinals at 6:30 p.m. The unbeaten Centaurs beat No. 8 Killingly 3-0.

    Olivia Carney had 31 assists for Fitch while Nora Ryan added 20 kills and 10 digs, and Aby Hagley finished with 10 digs. Maya Conley had eight kills and 18 digs for NFA (8-12) while Bella Lllano added 15 assists, four aces and 10 digs, Eliana Jewell had eight kills and Sarah Ericson had 15 digs.

    In another match:

    • Second-seeded East Lyme rolled to a 25-8, 25-11 and 25-23 victory over No. 7 Bacon Academy in the ECC Division I quarterfinals. Mya Delesdernier had 12 digs and Katie Solinsky four kills for the Vikings (17-3), who will play No. 3 Waterford in Monday's semifinals at Fitch at 4:30 p.m. Waterford defeated No. 6 Ledyard 3-1 on Friday in the quarterfinals.

    H.S. football

    • Ed Holmes rushed for five touchdowns as Bullard-Havens remained unbeaten with a 32-14 victory over Thames River in the Connecticut Technical Conference.

    The Crusaders (4-2, 4-2) led 14-6 on a 32-yard touchdown run by Albert Velazquez in the second quarter (Logan Starr had scored early on a 1-yard run) before the Tigers (7-0, 7-0) came to live behind Holmes, whose TD run late in the first half cut the deficit to 14-12 before Bullard-Havens outscored Thames River 20-0 in the second half.

    "We might not have gotten the win today," coach Darin Jones  said, "but a lot of great things were done on that field and for that I am happy."

    College volleyball

    • Angelou Dunton had a match-high 14 kills while Amanda Dake added 13 kills and 16 digs as Coast Guard Academy rallied to defeat Wheaton 3-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Game scores were 18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22. Coast Guard (18-11, 5-5) secured the No. 6 seed for the upcoming conference tournament and will play at No. 3 Babson in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Bridget Boyle added 11 kills for the Bears while Mary Sweet hit .375 with eight kills, Makenna Martin had a match-high 43 assists and Heather Miller recorded a career-high 16 digs.

    • First-place Bowdoin rolled to a 25-15, 25-18 and 25-20 win over Connecticut College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Katie Howley had seven kills and eight digs for the Camels (10-15, 2-8), while Elle Kass had 11 digs, Jenny Kellogg had 11 digs and six kills, Emma Roberts had three aces and Grace McGee finished with 21 assists.

    • Mitchell College ended its regular season with a 25-16, 25-13 and 25-11 loss to Elms in the New England Collegiate Conference. The Mariners (3-16, 2-7), will compete in the NECC tournament next week against an opponent to be determined. Ariana Carter and Laurissa Amaker each had five kills and eight digs for Mitchell while Shyla Phillips-Krick added 15 digs.

    Men's swimming

    • Freshman Devin McClure won a pair of events as Coast Guard defeated Springfield 149-132 at the University of Rhode Island. McClure won the 200 backstroke (1:58.82) and 200 freestyle (1:45.58) for the Bears (2-0), who also picked up individual wins from Matthew Doppel in the 100 backstroke (54.84), Chasse Sodemann in the 100 breaststroke (58.14), Connor Shenk in the 200 butterfly (1:59.17), Joe Rodriguez in the 50 freestyle (21.10), Tyler Dominick in the 100 freestyle (49.15) and Taylor Rowe won the 1,000 freestyle (10:05.64). Sodemann and Rodriguez also joined Matthew Fritz and Patrick Jackson to win the 200 medley relay (1:36.95).

    Women's swimming

    • Freshman Josie McGuire won two events as Coast Guard beat Springfield for the first time in school history 156-138 while losing to host URI 197-100. McGuire won the 500 freestyle (5:15.74) and 1,000 freestyle (10:44.70), while Kristen Durham-Young captured the 50 freestyle (25.18) and Sophie Furigay won the 200 backstroke (2:08.85) for the Bears (2-1).

    Men's hockey

    • Alexander Payusov scored a pair of power play goals, but Maine rallied for two goals in the third period to salvage a 2-2 overtime draw in a Hockey East game at the XL Center in Hartford. The Huskies (3-2-1, 1-1-1) beat the Black Bears 5-2 in Friday night's opener of the two-game weekend series. Goalie Adam Huska made 31 saves for the Huskies, who were outshot 33-28.

    College wrestling

    • Coast Guard, which sent a record four athletes to the NCAA Division III Championships last season, are tied for 11th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Preseason Rankings. The Bears are the second highest-ranked team from New England behind No. 3 Johnson & Wales. Senior Nick Remke, who earned All-America honors last season with a fifth-place finish at 165 pounds, is ranked second nationally at 165 entering the season. Sophomore Jon Wagner and junior AJ Aeberli, who both competed at the nationals last season, are also nationally ranked with Wagner seventh at 197 and Aeberli 10th at 174. Coast Guard opens its season on Nov. 17 at the Doug Parker Invite.
