    Local roundup: CGA, Conn notch wins in Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic

    New London — The Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team remained unbeaten with a 65-55 win over Wentworth in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic at Connecticut College on Sunday.

    The Bears (4-0) are off to their best start since the 2007-08 season when the team started 9-0, won a school-record 24 games and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III tournament. Nolan Benson scored 12 and Packy Witkowski had 11 points for Coast Guard.

    In the other game:

    • David Labossiere scored 27 points to lead Connecticut College to a 90-65 win over Medgar Evers. Dan Draffan had 19 points and 15 rebounds, Jack Zimmerman had eight assists, Ryan Omslaer had 14 rebounds and Matt Carlin came off the bench to score 15 for Conn (1-1).

    Women's basketball

    • Sami Ashton scored 18 points and had four steals, leading Connecticut College to a 55-44 win over WPI and the title of the Hampton Inn Tip-Off tournament. Margaret Corcoran had 12 points and blocked three shots and Dana Muckstadt had 10 rebounds for Conn (2-0).

    • Coast Guard lost to Endicott, 71-62, in the consolation game of UMass Dartmouth's Lafrance Classic. Coast Guard senior Micaela Martinelli had 15 points, nine rebounds and a career-high seven assists to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Breanna Wood had nine points and nine rebounds for Coast Guard (1-3).

    Men's soccer

    • UConn's season came to an end with a 4-0 loss to No. 1 Indiana in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament. UConn (12-6-2) was outshot 22-3. Freshman goalie Gianluca Catalano made five saves for UConn.  

    College wrestling

    • No. 11 Coast Guard had three second-place finishes and three more third-place finishes as they opened the season with a fourth-place finish at Springfield's Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday. Taking seconds were Nick Remke (165 pounds), Paul Detwiler (184) and heavyweight Patrick Irwin. Finishing third were Christian Gosch (157), AJ Aeberli (174) and Jeremy Berson (184).

    College cross country

    • Two Connecticut College runners earned All-America honors with their finish on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Wisconsin. 

    Senior Scott Mason finished the 8,000-meter course in 24:53.5, to finish 26th and earn All-America status for the second straight year. Junior Danny Aschale was 35th in a time of 24:56.4 to also earn All-America honors. It's the first time Conn's program has had two All-Americans in the same season. Mason also became the second two-time All-American in school history after Michael LeDuc, who achieved the feat in 2012 and 2013. 

    Road racing

    • Aidan Pepin of Quaker Hill won the Waterford High School 5K Turkey Trot on Saturday with a time of 17:37 and Waterford's Emily Miller was the top women's finisher, coming in seventh with a time of 21:32.
