    Local roundup: Norwich edges Danielson in CEBA opener

    Killingly — Norwich rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Danielson 3-2 in its Connecticut Elite Baseball Alliance 19-under debut on Thursday night at Owen Bell Park.

    The game was halted in the bottom of the sixth inning because of rain.

    Norwich trailed 2-0 after three when it erupted for three runs in the fourth. Riley Burke began the inning with a double to right-center and Gavin Thorburn walked. After both advanced on a wild pitch, Becker Bordeau delivered a sacrifice fly to score Burke.

    After Aaron Penney walked, Ryan Trudeau doubled home Thorburn to tie the game and Penney scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Will Wolfe.

    Reliever Brian Miskiewicz earned the win. He entered the game with the bases-loaded in the third. After walking the first batter, Miskiewicz escaped further damage with three straight strikeouts. He did not allow a hit over three innings and had five strikeouts.

    • Nick Morrell's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Tides to a 5-4 win over the Knights on Thursday. Bryce Bedard was the winning pitcher. Jeremy Santos homered for the Knights and teammate Liam Milewski struck out six batters in two innings of work. 

    • Mike Evans singled home Brian McGugan in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pirates a 2-1 win over the Sonics in an Eastern Connecticut Major League game at Washington Park. McGugan led off the inning with a single, moved to second on an error and stole third before Evans singled to right.

    • Tyler Mikula pitched a scoreless seventh in relief of Adam Fogarty to earn the win for the Pirates (1-1). Fogarty scattered five hits over six innings while striking out 10, allowing a run when Anthony Carembot singled home Michael Dreyfuss for the Sonics (0-1).

    • The Clams opened the ECML season with a 6-0 win over the Pirates on Wednesday night. Matt Malcom led the Clams with a double and three-run homer in the fourth. Drew Daley was the winning pitcher while Shaun Nadeau had a double for the Pirates.

    College honors

    • The Connecticut College men's and women's swimming teams were recognized as Scholar All-America teams by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Conn women had a 3.91 grade point average with six swimmers registering a perfect 4.0, while the Conn men had two swimmers with perfect 4.0 scores while finishing with a 3.53 GPA. Teams must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to be eligible.

    • All-American Adora Lawrence, a 2020 Coast Guard Academy graduate, has been named a finalist from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference as its NCAA Woman of the Year nominee.

    Ten women were nominated by their institutions to represent the NEWMAC, which awards its student-athletes based on academics, athletics, service and leadership.

    Lawrence, a Marine and Environmental Science major, qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 400 meters with a time of 58.19. She was also an indoor All-American in the distance medley relay as the relay placed third at the NCAA Championships last season with a school record time of 11:43.85.

    Lawrence finished her academic career at the Coast Guard with High Honors, while achieving Dean's List recognition during seven semesters.

    • Michael Kobylanski, athletic director at UConn Avery Point, was recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as a part of its "Volunteer 15" program.

    Kobylanski, honored for the sixth straight year, was one of just three CoSIDA members affiliated with the National Junior College Athletic Association to receive this honor. During the course of the 2019-20 academic year, he was involved in several initiatives in southeastern Connecticut.

    Kobylanski assisted the Avery Point community as an instructor for a section of its First-Year Experience course during the fall semester. He also participated in holiday events coordinated by Pfizer and Groton Human Services, as well as the 2019 American Heart Association Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk. Kobylanski served as a guest professional at the UConn Sport Business Association's annual conference for the second straight year.

    The CoSIDA Volunteer 15 program is an initiative to get CoSIDA members more involved in their communities. To qualify, CoSIDA members had to volunteer at least 15 hours during the school year.
