    Local roundup: Conn men and women lose basketball season openers

    Kings Point, N.Y. — Blaine McDonough had 20 points and seven rebounds while Bryce Bristow added 18 points and nine rebounds as Merchant Marine Academy defeated Connecticut College 77-61 on Saturday in a men's basketball game.

    The Mariners are 1-1 and will host the Camels again on Sunday at 1 p.m.

    Conn, playing its first game in more than a year due to COVID-19, started four freshmen and three finished in double figures. Jarron Flynn had 17 points and five assists, Billy Whelan had 14 points and four assists and David Murray scored 11 points.

    "Today was a difficult result, but we are grateful to play and feel that we can take a lot away from this experience," said head coach Tim Sweeney. "I am proud that this group stayed connected in spite of adversity in the second half. We have to bounce back quickly."

    Women's basketball

    • Babson remained unbeaten with a 77-46 victory over Conn College, which was playing its season opener and was the first New England Small College Athletic Conference program in any sport to begin playing during this pandemic plagued winter season.

    The Camels, playing their first game since Feb. 15, 2020, kept it close early, trailing only 16-15 after the first quarter, but the Beavers (7-0) broke the game open in the second quarter, using a 16-0 run to outscore Conn 24-9 for a 39-25 halftime lead.

    Jaycie Rojik led Conn with nine points while Audrey Shaev added eight and Casey Walsh had eight rebounds. Kelly Walsh led Babson with 19 points while Megan Bauman, a sophomore from East Lyme, added 10 points and seven assists.

    Hiller posted a double-double by racking up 15 points and 15 rebounds to pace Babson (7-0), which remained undefeated by recording an assist on 22 of its 31 field goals. She also blocked three shots. Kelly Walsh led all scorers with 19 points, while Smith finished with 15 points and three steals. Bauman contributed 10 to go along with seven assists.

    H.S. girls basketball

    • Alyssa Virtue had 22 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots as Fitch bounced back from its first loss with a 59-42 victory over East Lyme in the Eastern Connecticut Conference South Division. Rita Sefransky added 16 points and six steals for the Falcons (4-1) wile Charlotte Carney had 14 points and Frankie Foster 10 assists. Sachi Vora scored 12 points to lead the Vikings (0-3), including a pair of 3-pointers, while Tori Buzzelli had 11 points.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Norwich Free Academy overcame a dominating performance by East Lyme's Kaitlyn Abbey to defeat the Vikings 126.55-117.45 in the ECC. Abbey captured three individual events – floor (9.0), balance beam (9.35) and uneven bars (9.1) – to win the all-around (35.8) while adding a second in the vault (8.35). NFA's Emma Field was second in the all-around (32.4) and on beam (8.35) while the Wildcats' Sarah Fedeli was second on floor (8.55) and third on bars (7.8) and Ariana Gauthier was third on vault (8.3) and third on beam (7.9). East Lyme's Brooklyn Geida added a third on beam while Norwich Tech's Avery Sulman, competing as a team of one, was third in all-around (31.75) while winning the vault (8.4) and placing second on floor (8.45).

    Boys' basketball

    • Colby Livingston scored 21 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as Putnam beat Lyman Memorial 35-27 in an ECC North Division game on Friday. Ben Darrow led Lyman (1-3) with eight points.

    H.S. boys' fencing

    • East Lyme swept an ECC meet from host New London, winning 7-2 in epee and 6-3 in foil. East Lyme's Yanni Loginidis won 5-0 to clinch the win in epee while Nolan Deschenes won all three of his match in foil for the Vikings.

    H.S. girls' fencing

    • East Lyme defeated New London 8-1 in foil in an ECC meet as Kaitlyn Crowell won the fifth match 5-4 to clinch the victory.
