    Local roundup: New London advances to NE Babe Ruth 15 semis

    TrumbullNew London finished unbeaten in pool play at the New England Babe Ruth age 15 baseball tournament, beating Maine champion Skowhegan 11-1 on Sunday.

    By finishing 3-0 in Pool B New London gets a bye into Tuesday's semifinals.

    Ralphie Sanchez was 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI, Martin Light was 2-for-3 with two RBI and winning pitcher Ryan Ziegler struck out six.

    NECBL

    • Niantic's Trystan Levesque pitched six shutout innings as the Mystic Schooners beat the Bristol Blues 1-0. Levesque (Rhode Island) allowed three hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Mystic (18-15) scored in the top of the sixth inning. Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) singled home Daniel Crossen (Northeastern), who had doubled.

    FCBL

    • The Norwich Sea Unicorns beat the Westfield Starfires 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. Cam Varney (Mitchell) pitched five innings for the win, allowing one hit and one run with two strikeouts and two walks. Tommy Hughes (SCSU) pitched two hitless innings for his first save of the season. Kaelen Culpepper (Kansas State) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and Reece de Castro (Castleton) had two hits for Norwich (21-26). 

    Junior Legion

    • Norwich swept a doubleheader from Willimantic on Saturday, winning the suspended game 4-1 and the scheduled game 11-1 in five innings. Pat Terry was the winner in the opener and Dan St. George got the win in Game 2. Sawyer Hendrick was 3-for-4 and scored three runs in the second game for Norwich (9-1).
