    Local roundup: CGA sailing team finishes third at Nationals

    St. Petersburg, Fla. — Mystic's Sydney Motherway was one of four Coast Guard Academy sailors who finished third Saturday and Sunday in the ICSA Match Race National Championship. It is the first time Coast Guard has competed in the match race discipline, a format similar to America's Cup.

    Juniors Nate Olmstead (skipper), Matt Kickhafer (tactician), sophomore Motherway (bow) and freshman Jack Derry (trimmer) were fourth after the initial round, one spot ahead of reigning champion Stanford.

    In Sunday's best-of-three series against Georgetown, Coast Guard lost the first race to the Hoyas, but came from behind to win the second race and force the winner-take-all third race. The Bears got off to a strong start and held off a late charge to secure the victory and the third-place finish.

    Yale beat Navy 2-1 for the championship. Yale and Navy were were both 8-1 after the round robin, with Georgetown 7-2 and Coast Guard 5-4.

    Motherway is a graduate of the Marine Science Magnet High School and a former Stonington High School athlete.

    Men's basketball

    • Jon Beagle scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds as St. Thomas More beat Christian Redemption Academy 74-70. Joe Berry also scored 17 points and Kyle Carlesimo had 14 points, including a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to cement the win, for the Chancellors (2-0).

    • UConn women's basketball sophomore Paige Bueckers was named the Big East Player of the Week after leading the Huskies to a season-opening win over Arkansas.

    Bueckers set a new career high with 34 points vs. the Razorbacks. She scored all her points after the first quarter and shot 15-for-19 from the field. Bueckers tied Kerry Bascom (vs. Penn State, 1989) for the most points by a Husky in a season opener. Bueckers added six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals and had no turnovers in 40 minutes.

    • Freshman guard Saylor Poffenbarger will transfer from the UConn women's basketball program head coach Geno Auriemma announced Monday. A Class of 2025 signee, Poffenbarger enrolled early at UConn in January 2021. She played in 12 games last season, scoring six points and grabbing four rebounds.

    • Mitchell College junior Mikey Buscetto of Waterford was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in men's basketball. He averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 assists per game over the first three games of the season. He also tacked on 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals per contest and shot 40 percent from the floor.

    • Mitchell College senior Amina Wiley was named NEWMAC Player of the Week in women's basketball for the second straight week. She averaged 20.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game last week as the Mariners went 2-0. Wiley earned the honor for the sixth time in her career. She's averaging 21.0 points and 13.3 rebounds per contest this season and has led the Mariners to the best start in their Division III history.

    Conn College news

    • Three cross country runners from Connecticut College will compete in the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday in Louisville, Ky. Matt Carter and Jeffrey Love from the men's team and Julia Curran from the women's team will be competing. All three are juniors and will be appearing in the meet for the first time.
