Arooj Aftab, who performs Saturday at the United Theatre in Westerly, was recently nominated for a 2022 Grammy in the Best New Artist category.

Frankly, if you listen to her lovely, crystalline, butterfly-wing melodies as they cross the melancholic spectrums of Eastern trance music, New Age, classical, minimalism and pop, it's easy to believe she should be nominated in a variety of categories — some of which haven't been invented yet.

Lyrically inspired by Sufi poets, Aftab writes instantly mesmerizing tunes that reflect longing, calmness, searching, discovery and other admirable and natural human qualities. This is one of those artists and shows about which you'll be glad to say, "I was there!"
