New London - Norwich Free Academy held off a furious fourth-quarter comeback by New London High School and held on for a 54-52 victory over the Whalers in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division boys' basketball game on Friday night.

The Whalers (13-7, 7-3) trailed 51-40 with four minutes left, pulled to within two late and actually had a chance to send the game into overtime, but Keith Porter missed a 10-foot jump shot with four seconds remaining.

Porter led New London with a game-high 24 points and 14 rebounds.

NFA (12-7, 6-4) led 22-6 early before the Whalers came back to tie the game at 29-29 early in the third quarter. The game was tied again late in the quarter, 40-40, before Marcus Outlow hit three late free throws to give the Wildcats the lead for good, 43-40, after three.

Outlow led NFA with 19 points and Ryan Lusk added 17.

In other games:

• Darnay Gray had 20 points and nine rebounds as Ledyard took a 45-14 halftime lead and went on to beat Plainfield 70-40.

Thomas Whipple scored 16 with 10 assists, seven rebounds and seven steals and Khary Childs scored 17 for Ledyard (18-1), which has won 14 straight.

• George Logan scored 23 points, leading Old Lyme to a 67-34 win over Portland in the Shoreline Conference. Matti Fuller had 14 points and Dan Chapman scored eight for Old Lyme (13-5, 12-3).

• Matt Scheidel scored 20 points, including four 3-pointers, as Bacon Academy defeated Fitch, 74-41, in the ECC Large Division. Mario Graham led the Falcons, who finish 6-14, 2-8, with 12 points and Marc Evans added 10.

• Connor Lewis scored 12 points as Waterford finished its regular season with a 64-45 victory over Tourtellotte. Dan Martin added 11 points for the Lancers (12-8) and David Willox finished with 10.

• Anthony Malchiodi and Paul Pepas scored 16 points apiece as St. Bernard rolled to a 60-46 victory over Montville. Remy Bonser added 15 points for the Saints (9-10) while Dominic Walmsley led the Indians (5-14) with 17 points and Buddy Dewaine had 12.

H.S. wrestling

• Ledyard leads the Class M tournament with 75 points heading into today's quarterfinals at Law of Milford. Foran is second with 55 followed by Platt (54), Avon (53) and Branford (50.5). Waterford is eighth with 38, New London is 11th with 33 and St. Bernard-Norwich Tech-Wheeler is 20th with 18.

• Simsbury leads the Class LL tournament with 73 points heading into today's quarterfinals at Trumbull. Danbury is second with 69 followed by Xavier (67), Trumbull (61) and Southington (54). NFA is sixth with 47.5.

• Farmington leads the Class L tournament with 60 points heading into today's quarterfinals at Bristol Central. New Milford is second with 59 followed by Hand (55), Fairfield Ludlowe (54) and Fairfield Warde (51). Fitch is 19th with 14 and East Lyme is 22nd with 12.

• Terryville leads the Class S tournament with 64 points heading into today's quarterfinals at Haddam-Killingworth. Morgan is second with 60 followed by Windham (59), Nonnewaug (52) and Montville (51.5). Old Lyme is 27th with 9.5 points.

H.S. swimming

• East Lyme beat New London 80-54, clinching at least a share of the ECC title. The Vikings (13-1, 11-0) can wrap up their sixth straight title with a win over Ledyard-Stonington on Wednesday. Andrew Rubino, Mark Chmielewski, Brandon Biondi and Simon Wechsler won events for East Lyme. Scott Reyes and Greg Smith won events for New London (0-11, 0-11).

• Christian Berg won two events and anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay team which won the final event, lifting Fitch to an 85-82 nonleague win over Haddam-Killingworth. Aidan Ely, Sam Kokomoor and Dakota Williams teamed with Berg to win in 3:31.83. Berg won the 200 freestyle in 1:52 and the 100 backstroke in 1:02. Ely and Kokomoor also won events for Fitch (5-7).

• Collin Esquirol won a pair of events and was on three winning relay teams, leading Ledyard-Stonington to a 96-80 win over Waterford in an ECC meet. Esquirol won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.99 and the 100 freestyle in 54.15. Fredrick France, Matt Peluso and Mike Hughes also won events for Ledyard-Stonington (11-1, 10-1) and John Moody was on all three winning relay teams. Dan Clark, Nik Lehet and Ryan Hessling won events for Waterford (4-8, 4-7).

College football

• UConn added the third quarterback to its 2013 signing class when 6-foot-6 Richard Lagow of Plano, Texas, signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Huskies. Lagow, the 23rd member of UConn's recruiting class, passed for 1,968 yards and eight touchdowns last fall.

The Huskies also signed two quarterbacks during last week's official Feb. 6 signing day - Xavier quarterback Tim Boyle and Kivan Taylor of Grady High School in Atlanta, Ga. UConn also returns starter Chandler Whitmer, reserve Scott McCummings and former New London and Masuk great Casey Cochran, who was redshirted as a freshman.

Women's hockey

• Gabrielle Vukasin scored 29 seconds into overtime, lifting Williams College to a 3-2 win over Connecticut College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Leah Kallen and Courtney Dumont scored goals and Kelsie Fralick made 26 saves for Conn (12-10-1, 6-8-1).

Men's hockey

• Connecticut College couldn't protect a 1-0 lead, losing to Colby 2-1 in a NESCAC game. Colby's Jonathan Sdao snapped a tie with his third-period goal. Keith Veronesi scored in the first period, Mike Doyle and Sebastian Meltzer assisted and Tom Conlin made 25 saves for Conn (7-13-3, 3-11-3).
