    Local roundup: Mitchell wins first NECC volleyball tourney match in program history

    New London — Fourth-seeded Mitchell College, playing in the New England Collegiate Conference volleyball tournament for the first time, defeated No. 6 Becker College 3-0 in Tuesday night's quarterfinals.

    The Mariners (14-11) will play at top-seeded Eastern Nazarene on Friday at 7 p.m.

    Olivia DeLoach led Mitchell with 12 kills and 14 digs while Bree Rudolph had nine kills, Claire Binfield and Lexi Hubbard combined for 31 assists and Cameron Childs had a match-high 21 digs.

    In other matches:

    • Coast Guard advanced to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament semifinals with a 3-1 win over No. 4 Wheaton. No. 5 Coast Guard won 15-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19. The Bears (20-9) play at No. 1 Babson in the semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m.

    Amanda Dake had match highs with 14 kills and 24 digs and Noelle Tursky had 20 cassists, 11 kills and 13 digs for the Bears. Angelou Dunton became the fourth player in Coast Guard history to reach the 1,000-kills and 1,000-digs mark and had eight kills and 17 digs in the match. 

    Women's soccer

    • Katelyn Korzec scored both Babson goals, including the game winner off a rebound in the 71st minute, as the seventh-seeded Beavers defeated No. 2 Coast Guard 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC tournament. Babson (9-8-2) will play at No. 3 WPI in the semifinals on Thursday. Abby McGuire, assisted by Waterford senior Claire Hurley, scored in the 52nd off a corner kick for the Bears, who finish 8-10-1. Hurley finishes her career with 33 goals (tied for first all-time) and program records for assists (20) and points (86).

    H.S. boys' soccer

    • Top-seeded Windham scored a pair of goals two minutes apart to break a 1-1 tie and defeat No. 4 Montville 4-1 in the ECC Division II tournament semifinals. The Whippets (14-1-2), who will play No. 2 Lyman Memorial in Thursday's final at East Lyme (4:30 p.m.), trailed 1-0 before Alfonso Vazquez scored the first of two goals in the 55th minute to tie the game. His second goal in the 66th minute made it 2-1 and Alexandro Coj added an insurance goal two minutes later. Jacob Rose scored in the first half for the Indians (9-5-3), while Isaiah Gallagher made 10 saves (Montville was outshot 18-2).

    • Dylan Lucey scored a pair of goals as No. 3 Lyman Memorial beat No. 2 Wheeler 3-0 in the ECC Division II semi. The game was called after halftime due to poor field conditions and heavy rain. Wheeler is 9-6-2. "It was the right decision,'' said Wheeler coach Joe Mendonca. "The safety of the players has to come first and they were slipping and sliding all over the place.''

    H.S. volleyball

    • Second-seeded Montville advanced to the semifinals of the ECC Division II tournament with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-13 win over No. 7 Putnam in Monday night's quarterfinals. Jenny Alarcon had six blocks, five kills and 10 digs for the Indians, who will play No. 6 Plainfield in Wednesday's semifinals at Griswold at 4:30 p.m., while Maya Hillman added eight kills, five blocks and four digs, and Anna Kreitlow had 16 digs.

    Youth soccer

    • Two local boys' teams won state championships over the weekend during the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association State Cup finals.

    East Lyme, playing in the U15 state final, defeated Canton 7-1 in Simsbury as Gabriel Delgado and Diego Virgen scored two goals apiece, Tristan Seguin, Finian Gates and Robert Stoddard each scored one goal and goalies Ben Johnson and Max Mahlke combined to make six saves. It was the first state cup in East Lyme history.

    Waterford, playing in the U11 state final, defeated Greenwich 3-2 as Brayden Michonski scored the game-winner late to break a 2-2 tie. It was the first time Waterford entered a team in the tournament.
