    H.S. roundup: Three ECC coaches receive state honors from CHSCA

    Three Eastern Connecticut Conference coaches are among 26 to selected to receive Connecticut High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year awards for 2021.

    Griswold's Dana Cooke (wrestling), Stonington's Jeff Medeiros (girls' lacrosse) and Waterford's Colleen Lineburgh (Unified Sports) were selected by their peers for the overall body of work in their specific sports.

    The will be honored during a ceremony and dinner on Thursday, May 5 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. Tickets can be purchased through May 2 at chcsa.org.  

    Boys' golf

    • Ben Edwards shot a 37 to earn medalist honors and lead Fishers Island to a 188-202 win over Grasso Tech at Pequot Golf Course. Nathan Sylvester led Grasso with a 38.

    Boys' volleyball

    • Barlow rolled to a 25-17, 25-9 and 25-19 win over Norwich Free Academy. Brian Contreas had three kills for NFA (0-2) while Jackson Lee had a kill and two digs.

    Boys' lacrosse

    • John Zimmerman had four goals and an assist as Waterford beat Woodstock 10-7 in an ECC Division I game. C.J. Landry had three goals and an assist, Jake Kozlowski had 10 saves and Anthony Stone, Jackson Huta, Trevor Stringer and Aiden Bousquet had a goal each for Waterford (2-0, 1-0). Jonah Libby had two goals and two assists for the Centaurs.

    Softball

    • Maddie Burrows pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11 at Waterford defeated Ledyard 4-1 on Tuesday. Burrows also had two hits and scored twice for the Lancers (2-0) while Anna Donahue added two hits, including a two-run homer in the first, and Lily Marelli drove in the other two runs with a double. The Colonels are 0-2.

    • Melina Graziano had a double, a home run, stole three bases and scored to highlight NFA's 5-2 win over Woodstock on Tuesday. Winning pitcher Jillian Dykema went the distance and struck out 11 for the Wildcats (2-1) while Hannah Daniewicz had a triple and scored and Elena Sustache had two hits, two stolen bases and a run. On Saturday, Madison Waltke tripled and scored the only run in a 4-1 loss at Fairfield Ludlowe.

    Boys' track and field

    • Anthony Gaeta won the pole vault (8 feet), shot put (41-8) and discus (139-7) to highlight Griswold's 124-24 season-opening win over Montville on Tuesday. Ryan Pelillo added wins in the 110 hurdles (18.39 seconds) and 300 hurdles (48.30) for the Wolverines while Michael Strain captured the 800 (2:05.94) and 1,600 (4:44.6). Lebron Maurice won the 100 (11.66) for Montville.

    • Fitch opened its season Tuesday by sweeping a tri-meet against New London (130-15) and Windham (103-47). Windham also New London 98-41. Fitch had three double winners with Charles Cabusao taking the javelin (116-3) and pole vault (9-6), Carson Riley the 1,600 (4:56.9) and 3,200 (11:13.4) and Kheavan Kershaw the 110 hurdles (18.3) and 300 hurdles (46.8). Jayden Villafane won the 200 (23.2), long jump (20-2) and triple jump (40-9.5) for Windham.

    Girls' track and field

    • Montville's Kelsey Chiasson won the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches), shot put (30-2.25) and discus (79-1) in a season-opening 101-28 win over Griswold on Tuesday. Maya Suarez added wins in the 1,600 (5:49.89) and 3,200 (12:35.34) for Montville. Taylor Bialowas won the 100 (13.54) and long jump (15-7.5) for the Wolverines.

    • Fitch defeated New London (99-31) and Windham (99-46) to sweep its season-opening meet on Tuesday. Amaris Johnson won the 100 and long jump while teaming with Amelia Lovering, Chloe Gehrlein and Saffron Pentell to win the 4x100 relay. Lovering added a win in the 400 and a second in the 200, Karen Johnson won the 200 and was second in the 100, and Sydney Post won the high jump for the Falcons. Kmara Royster won the 100 and 300 hurdles for the Whalers and joined Tatiana Pemberton, Anissah White and Akkeena Farrior-Parcak to win the 4x400 relay.
