    Local roundup: Old Lyme girls’ basketball outraces Portland to the finish

    Portland — The Old Lyme High School girls’ basketball team outscored Portland 20-6 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 46-43 win in its Shoreline Conference opener.

    Sybil Neary and Ava Roth combined for 14 points in the fourth quarter. Neary, a freshman, finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Roth had 13 points and seven steals for the Wildcats (1-1).

    In other games:

    • Rory Risley had 14 points and 12 rebounds in Stonington’s 61-31 victory over Montville in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III. Diya Patyel added 14 points and Presley Smith 12 for Stonington (1-1, 1-0). Ava Collins and Jada Cheung had 11 points each for Montville (1-1, 0-1).

    • Sophie Byrne scored 19 points to lead Grasso Tech to a 44-24 win over Cheney Tech. Mya Guillmette had 13 points and Jamillette Montes and Gi Gi Colon sparked the defense for Grasso (1-1).

    • Dre’Ana Singleton scored 23 points as Fitch beat St. Bernard 70-36. Meleeya Robbins had 15 points and Ada Ellis scored 12 and Mariette El Khoury had 12 points and seven rebounds for Fitch (1-1). Angelica Tompkins scored 26 and Maddie Scribner had eight points for the Saints (0-2).

    • Jenny Lopez scored 14 points as Lyman Memorial beat Wheeler 57-25 in the ECC Division IV opener for both teams. Taylor Pankowski and Phoebe Carpenter scored 12 points each for Lyman (1-2). Makayla Delzer had seven points and three rebounds, Abby Butremovic had five points and four rebounds and Marissa Perkins had 10 rebounds for Wheeler (0-2).

    • Bacon Academy led 38-12 at halftime and went on to beat Waterford 71-23 in the ECC Division II opener for both teams. Marissa Nudd had 23 points and eight rebounds to lead Bacon (2-0). Emily Ferrigno had a career-high 19 points, Elizabeth Glover had 10 steals and Cara Shea had nine steals and eight rebounds for the Bobcats. Lucy Walker led Waterford (1-1) with seven points.

    • Tourtellotte ended the game on an 18-7 run as it beat Norwich Tech 35-31 in the season opener for both teams. Tara Heffernan led Tourtellotte with 13 points and Kaylee Gray scored 11. Olivia Luurtsema had 10 points for Norwich Tech.

    • Killingly beat Griswold 52-17. Abby Matheson had eight points and Kierra Nielson scored five for Griswold (0-2).

    H.S. boys’ basketball

    • Old Lyme lost to Portland 71-45 in a Shoreline Conference game which was the Wildcats’ season opener. Calvin Monte had 16 points, Caden Monte scored 10 and Alex Olson had eight points for Old Lyme.

    • Fitch rallied to defeat Woodstock Academy 61-55 in overtime in an ECC Division II game Thursday night. The Falcons, who trailed by as many as 15 points and by eight with under a minute to play in regulation, tied the game when Van Spruill hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Fitch then outscored the Centaurs 10-4 in overtime. Mikey Wagner and Zander Timmerman scored 12 points apiece for the Falcons.

    • Jeff Souvenance converted a three-point play with eight seconds remaining, then took a charge as time expired as Griswold outlasted Killingly 61-60 in an ECC Division III game Thursday night. Michael Strain led the Wolverines with with 17 points while Evan Merchant had 13 and Jacob Strain 11.

    Men’s basketball

    • St. Thomas More lost to ISA Prep of Ohio 70-62. Tyler Betsey scored 33 points and Justin Menard and Louis Semona had 10 rebounds each for T-More.

    College lacrosse

    • Five members of the Connecticut College men's lacrosse program were named captains for the 2023 season, as announced by head coach Jim Nagle. Seniors Brandon Allen, Sean Fox, Gus Mazzocca, Jared Rainville and Jack Venturelli will lead the Camels.

    Allen will serve as a utility player for the Camels, much as he has for his entire career. He has enjoyed success and played many different roles at Conn, seeing action at attack, defensive midfield and offensive midfield.

    Fox is a three-year letterwinner as a defensive midfielder and the only returning captain. He played in all 14 games last year and scooped up 24 ground balls while notching his first career goal against Tufts in the NESCAC Tournament.

    Mazzocca is a three-year letterwinner in the offensive midfield who played in all 14 games last season. He ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 19 goals and eight assists for 27 points.

    Rainville has been the team’s leading scorer in each of the last two seasons. In 2022 he started all 14 games and posted 39 goals and 18 assists for 57 points, which tied for the 10th-highest single season points total in program history.

    Venturelli, a defenseman, was an honorable mention All-America and first team All-NESCAC selection last season. He started all 14 games as a junior and led the Camels in both ground balls (59) and caused turnovers (29). He will lead a defensive unit that made huge strides in 2022.
