    Local roundup: Wesleyan hands Conn men first NESCAC defeat

    Middletown — Gabe Ravetz scored 23 points and made six of Wesleyan’s 12 3-pointers as the Cardinals outlasted Connecticut College 69-64 in a battle of New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s basketball unbeatens on Sunday.

    Wesleyan is 10-5, 3-0.

    David Murray had 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocks to lead the Camels (12-5, 3-1), who had a four-game winning streak snapped, while Elias Espinosa and Andrew Hertel added 10 points apiece and Cam Schainfeld had nine points and six assists.

    In other games:

    • UConn Avery Point fell to 1-13 with a 106-52 loss at Southern Maine Community College. Jason Cohen scored 21 points for the Pointers, making seven 3-pointers, while Jose Balseca added 13 points.

    Women’s basketball

    • Madi Gomez had nine points and 11 rebounds as Wesleyan defeated Conn College 56-43 in the NESCAC. Wesleyan is 6-9, 1-2. Abby Ilusorio had a career-high 11 points and five rebounds for the Camels (4-11, 0-4) while Jaycie Rojik added nine points and eight rebounds and Catie Donadio finished with nine rebounds.

    • Southern Maine CC outlasted Avery Point 83-77. Adeline Smith had 32 points and seven rebounds to lead the Pointers (6-7) while Francesca Foster finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Jade Redo had 17 points.

    H.S. indoor track

    • Old Lyme freshman Chase Gilbert won the 2-mile race in a school record 11:03.58 and anchored the Wildcats’ winning 4x800-meter relay team at Saturday night’s East Coast Invite in Providence. Maddy Morgado, Aggie Hunt, Lyla Powers and Gilbert teamed up to win in 10:06.83.

    Dylan Sheehan set a pair of school records, placing third in the boys’ shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 3.25 inches and finishing fifth in the weight throw (59-3).

    Old Lyme added two more school records in the girls’ competition with Zoe Eastman-Grossel placing fifth in the 55 hurdles (9.27 seconds) and Morgado, Bronwyn Kyle, Hunt and Lyla Powers finishing seventh in the 4x400 relay in 4:28.01.

    • Ledyard also competed and had a pair of relay teams place third. The girls’ 4x800-meter team of Josie Withbroe, Ella Stephenson, Kate Littler and Avery Widlicka finished in 10:29.80 while the boys’ 4x800 team of Hayden Baber, Auguste Estriplet, Jack Hill & Gabriel Huff finished in 8:41.99.

    Luca Viviano was the Colonels’ other place winner in the pole vault (6th, 11 feet) while the other girls’ place winners were Ella Stephenson in the 400 (5th, 1:03.2), Katheryn Giegelhem in the pole vault (6th, 8-6) and Kate Littler in the 800 (7th, 2:26.34).
