East Lyme girls face two-time defending champion Guilford in Sunday’s Class M lacrosse final

Two teams that have won the last three CIAC Class M girls’ lacrosse state titles will meet for the 2023 championship on Sunday at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield at 5:30 p.m.

Guilford (13-6), the third seed and 2021 and 2022 Class M champion, will face top-seeded East Lyme (20-1), which won the 2019 state crown. The 2020 tournament was not played due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Grizzlies defeated St. Joseph (12-8) in the 2022 final and Barlow (11-10) in the 2021 title game. It is Guilford’s only two state championships.

The Vikings also have two state titles to their credit, defeating St. Joseph 10-6 in 2019 and Amity 7-3 in the CIAC Division II final back in 2006.

The two teams met during the regular season with East Lyme pulling out a 10-9 victory back on April 19 in Guilford. In that game, Dani Bruno had six goals and two assists to lead the Vikings and M.J. Santa Barbara had three goals and two assists for the Grizzlies.

Guilford held a 23-17 edge in shots that night with East Lyme goalie Gigi Franco making 14 saves.

The East Lyme-Guilford game will be the fourth and final lacrosse final of the day at Sacred Heart’s Campus Field following three boys’ finals — the Class S game between St. Joseph and Weston at 10 a.m., the Class M final between Cheshire and Hand at 12:30 p.m. and the Class L final between Fairfield Prep and Staples at 3 p.m.
