    Old Lyme’s Dylan Sheehan captures CIAC hammer state title and breaks meet record

    New Britain — Old Lyme senior Dylan Sheehan broke a meet record while winning the CIAC boys’ hammer throw on Monday afternoon at Willow Brook Park.

    Sheehan’s winning throw was 206 feet, 7 inches, breaking the old mark of 201-7 set a year ago by Hillhouse’s Gary Moore Jr., who recently completed his freshman season at Division I Baylor University.

    It’s been a productive two weeks for Sheehan, who captured gold medals in the shot put and discus at the Class S state meet, placed second in the State Open in the discus, then earned All-New England honors on Saturday when he placed fourth and set a school record in the discus (170-9) at the New England Championships in Bangor, Maine.

    Coginchaug’s Elizabeth Sorenson won the girls’ hammer state with with a throw of 141-6.

    The CIAC postseason will conclude Tuesday and Wednesday with the two-day, seven event girls’ hepathlon, the two-day, 10 event boys’ decathlon and three steeplechase races, the girls’ 2,000 and boys’ 2,000 and 3,000.

    Stonington’s Josh Mooney has entered to defend his title in the decathlon. The UConn-bound senior will be joined by East Lyme senior Shawn Henning and three Lyman Memorial athletes: senior Ryan Dungan, junior Kyle Franchi and sophomore Nicholas Zaprianov.

    Local athletes entered in the heptathlon include Stonington sophomore Katie Anbari, Montville sophomore Isabel Northrop, East Lyme junior Lacey-Lee Keramidas, Lyman Memorial senior Leah Comeroski, Bacon Academy freshman Alyssa Blanchette and Bacon senior Megan Braga.

    Local athletes entered to compete in Tuesday’s girls’ 2,000 steeplechase: Ledyard sophomore Kate Littler, Waterford sophomore Avery Maiese, Stonington sophomore Peyton Vanderstreet, Montville senior Maya Suarez, Stonington junior Addison Labbe and Lyman Memorial senior Magda Carpenter.

    Local athletes entered to compete in Wednesday’s boys’ 2,000-meter steeplechase: Norwich Free Academy junior Nicholas DeBartolo and sophomore Robinson Meuse, Lyman Memorial sophomore Holden LeMay and Stonington sophomore Brady deCastro.

    Local athletes entered to compete in Wednesday’s boys’ 3,000-meter steeplechase: East Lyme sophomore Sean McCauley, NFA sophomore Patrick Croughwell, NFA junior Sawyer Barile, Fitch junior Ryan Dunning, Griswold senior Jackson Collins and St. Bernard junior Colin Britner.
