    Montville girls edge Ledyard for ECC Division II title; Colonels repeat in boys

    New London — In a dramatic finish, the Montville High School girls’ indoor track team won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II championship Saturday night at the Coast Guard Academy in a meet that came down to the final event.

    Ledyard won the 4x400-meter relay to earn 10 points in the last event, but Montville’s team finished third to earn six points, allowing the Wolves to hang on for a 99-97.5 victory over the defending champion Colonels. Bacon Academy was third with 68.5.

    The Ledyard boys got an ECC record-setting performance from Christian Wiltshire in the high jump (6 feet, 5 inches) and defended their title with 143 points. The Colonels were followed by Bacon (64) and St. Bernard (53).

    Isabel Northrop, a Montville junior, won the 55 hurdles in 9.31 seconds and took the high jump with a leap of 5-0 to help lift the Wolves and Kamryn Plikus was first in the pole vault at 11-0.

    Montville went 1-2 in the hurdles and the pole vault, with Katherine Myjak coming in second in the hurdles and Brenna LaBranche as the runner-up in the pole vault. The Wolves finished first, third and fourth in the high jump, with Hannah Suarez and Plikus also placing.

    Ledyard’s Kate Littler won the 1,000 (3:19.48), the 1,600 (5:46.76) and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 team (4:27.58), joining Sam Doran, Avery Widlicka and Ella Stephenson. The Colonels also finished first in the 4x720 relay with Doran, Widlicka, Fionna Woody and Josie Withbroe.

    Bacon Academy’s Alyssa Blanchette won the long jump (15-6.5) and the shot put (34-10) and teammate Reina Hill was first in the 300 (44.71). Stonington’s Peyton Vanderstreet won the 3,200 in 12:35.98 and St. Bernard was first in the 4x180 relay.

    The Ledyard boys got wins from Wiltshire in the high jump, Jamel Kearse in the long jump (20-10) and from the 4x180 and 4x720 relay teams. Kearse Jr., Roan Fothergill, Luca Viviano and Mateo Viviano ran the 4x180 relay in 1:24.85 and Antonio Soldato, Steven Ives, Gabe Huff and Hayden Baber turned in an 8:07.03 in the 4x720.

    St. Bernard’s Colin Britner was a double-winner individually, taking the 1,000 (2:45.29) and the 3,200 (10:30.23), and also contributed to the Saints’ victory in the sprint medley relay along with Savas Videll, Matthew Pero and Benjamin Howes.

    Lyman’s Kenyon Morrissette won the 300 (36.92), Stonington’s Landon Pelletier the 600 (1:27.55), Griswold’s Tycen LaBelle the 1,600 (4:40.08) and Montville’s Enzo Valenti the shot put (45-8). Bacon won the 4x400 relay.
