    Local roundup: Lancers win a close one in ECC Division I boys’ basketball tournament

    Waterford — Parker Spencer had 27 points and four assists and Juan Morel 21 points and 21 rebounds for the fourth-seeded Waterford High School boys’ basketball team in a 71-68 victory over No. 5 Norwich Free Academy in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I boys’ basketball tournament Thursday.

    Waterford moved on to meet No. 1 St. Bernard in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday at Waterford. No. 2 New London will face third-seeded Fitch in the other semifinal, scheduled for 4 p.m.

    In the ECC Division II semifinals, also at Waterford, No. 2 Wheeler plays No. 3 Griswold at 11 a.m., followed by a matchup between No. 1 Stonington and No. 4 Tourtellotte at 1 p.m.

    Jordi Cassar (10 points) also had double figures for Waterford (10-11), which led 34-29 at halftime and 50-49 after three quarters, while Quinn Speller had a team-high five steals.

    Armanee Davis had 21 points for NFA (10-10) and Malachy Murray had 14.

    In other games:

    • Amyre Gray finished with 16 points and Ty Grudzien 15 in No. 1 St. Bernard’s 74-39 victory over eighth-seeded Woodstock Academy in the ECC Division I tournament quarterfinals. Curtis Marshall added 11 points for the Saints (18-3), who led 42-20 at halftime.

    • Devan Williams had a team-high 25 points in No. 2-seeded New London’s 64-51 win over No. 7 Windham in the ECC Division I tournament quarters. Da’Shaun Phillips added 22 points and he and Williams combined to finish 16-for-20 from the foul line for the Whalers (17-4).

    • JJ Robinson had 17 points, five assists and three steals as No. 3 Fitch defeated No. 6 East Lyme 55-48 in the ECC Division I tournament quarterfinals. Malakhi Sabb added 14 points for the Falcons (14-6). Brendan Osso had 20 points for East Lyme (12-9), including five 3-point field goals.

    • Deondre Bransford had 11 points, 13 rebounds and two steals in No. 2 Wheeler’s 43-33 win over Plainfield in the quarterfinals of the ECC Division II tournament. Kyle Kessler and Keith Zardies each finished with 10 points and Zardies added seven rebounds, six steals and three assists for the Lions (15-6), who led 18-14 at halftime and stretched the advantage to 32-24 after three quarters. Brayden Marquis had 11 points for Plainfield.

    • Kaiden Kazlauskas had 20 points and 11 rebounds for No. 3 Griswold in a 69-53 victory over No. 6 Bacon Academy in the ECC Division II quarterfinals. KinKade Rubino had 15 points and Kolby Mills 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals for Griswold (13-8). Theo Koustofavas finished with 19 points for Bacon (8-13), Jace King had 11 and Troy Johnson 10.
