New play and musical onstage in Salem

Southeastern Connecticut has become quite the place for developmental readings of new stage works. There is, of course, the long-running conferences at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford.

And at this time of year, there are the public readings presented by the wonderful Live & In Color at the Bingham Camp in Salem.

Chosen for Live & In Color’s 2022 season:

    – The play “Wetlands” by AriDy Nox centers on a young environmental scientist named Tara who is about to make a major breakthrough. She is also haunted by one of her ancestors, who holds wisdom that challenges Tara. Reading is Sept. 7.

    – In the musical “Howdyland!,” by JB Tang Jackson and Dominique Gelin, two strangers are transported into a 1960s cowboy TV show named “Howdyland.” “As they adventure through the world of Hollywood westerns to find their way home, they showdown against the big question: who gets to be a hero in the wild west?,” according to Live & In Color. Readings are Sept. 10 and 11.

Live & In Color, which started under the name Bingham Camp Theatre Retreat in 2015, has a core mission of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the theater industry. It was founded by artistic director Devanand Janki.

Live & In Color, Bingham Camp, 490 East Haddam Road, Salem; “Wetlands,” 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7; “Howdyland!” 3 p.m. Sept. 10 and 2 p.m. Sept. 11; tickets are free, but donations are appreciated; liveandincolor.org.
