Goodspeed kicks off season with ‘Gypsy’

Imagine one musical featuring all of these classic numbers: “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” “Let Me Entertain You.” “Together, Wherever We Go.”

Well, that musical is “Gypsy,” and it’s the first show in Goodspeed Musicals’ 2023 season.

The show boasts a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The story, which is inspired by the life of Gypsy Rose Lee, is set in the world of vaudeville and burlesque. It centers on a stage mother who pushes her kids, in the hopes they’ll reach the stardom she never did.

Jenn Thompson directs a cast led by Judy McLane, Talia Suskauer and Laura Sky Herman.

    “Gypsy,” April 28-June 18, The Goodspeed, 6 Main St., East Haddam; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Wed., 7:30 p.m. Thurs., 8 p.m. Fri., 3 and 8 p.m. Sat., and 2 p.m. Sun.; also, select Thursdays at 2 p.m. and select Sundays at 6:30 p.m.; $30-$82; (860) 873-8668, goodspeed.org.
