There are musicals about unlikely subjects, and then there’s “Little Shop of Horrors” — about a murderous, man-eating plant.

Sounds like a disastrous show waiting to happen, but “Little Shop” is a fun comedy with some of the catchiest songs around, thanks to songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

The Chestnut Street Playhouse is opening its 2024 season with this gem of a musical, running March 14-31.

The production, about a nerdy florist shop worker who raises what turns out to be a blood-thirsty plant, stars Lucas Pereira, Kourtney Slowik as Audrey, and Jill Gonzalez as the plant, which Seymour names Audrey II.

Also in the cast: Kevin Ladd, Dan Delosh, Ciara Rollins, Piper Meyers and Frances Ashun and ensemble members Craig Blake, Olivia Henry, Persephone Marien, Nichelle Rollins, Madi Ruta and Chris Turner.

Liz Wilcox directs, Natasha Darius is the music director, and Keri Danner choreographs.

“Little Shop of Horrors,” Chestnut Street Playhouse, 24 Chestnut St., Norwich; opens Thursday and runs through March 31; 7:30 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 2 p.m. Sun.; $29.59 for adults, $26.96 for seniors and students; https://csp.ludus.com/
