Man faces attempted murder charge in shooting of 14-year-old

A man was arrested Sunday on attempted murder and other charges for allegedly shooting a teenager in Waterbury a day earlier, police said.

The shooting was reported Saturday at about 6:48 p.m. at a multi-family home at 38 Silver St., where officers responded and found a 14-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound in a hallway, according to the Waterbury Police Department. The boy’s injuries were considered life-threatening, police said.

The teen was initially taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury and later transferred to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, where he has been listed in stable condition, according to police.

Police said they quickly identified 35-year-old Axel Maldonado of Waterbury as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest on Sunday. He was located by authorities later in the day and arrested on charges of criminal attempt at murder with special circumstances, first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a minor, criminal use of a weapon, violation of pistol permit requirements, illegal transfer of a pistol and illegal alteration of a firearm.

Maldonado was held on $1 million bond and was expected to be arraigned in Waterbury Superior Court on Monday.
