UConn men land second guard with Gaffney's commitment

Jalen Gaffney announced his commitment to UConn via social media on Monday. He made up his mind two days earlier during an official visit to Storrs.

"In my head, I made my decision on Saturday," said Gaffney said during a phone interview on Monday. "I talked to my parents. I knew it was the place for me."

In a span of about a week, the Huskies landed their backcourt of the future. Gaffney, a 6-foot-2 combination guard from Westtown (Pa.) School, joins 6-4 James Bouknight of MacDuffie School in Granby, Mass.

After Bouknight committed early last week, he reached out to Gaffney.

"We talked a little bit after his commitment," Gaffney said. "He started recruiting me. ... Our games complement each other."

Coach Dan Hurley and his staff zeroed in Gaffney and Bouknight, two top 100 recruits, in recent months.

UConn made the cut when Gaffney, who's from Columbus, N.J., narrowed his list to six schools, with Florida, Clemson, St. John's, Xavier and Pittsburgh also in the running.

Gaffney's official visit convinced him that he wanted to be a Husky.

"I like everything about it," Gaffney said. "The campus is nice. I love the coaching staff. I trust what coach Hurley is doing. I like his playing style and how he coaches. He's a players' coach."

He also felt comfortable with the players.

He knows UConn redshirt freshman Sid Wilson. Graduate transfer Tarin Smith played with one of Gaffney's good friends at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, N.J.

Jalen Adams served as Gaffney's host. Gaffney called Adams "a great guy."

"We all have a good relationship now," Gaffney said of the team.

There's also a strong family connection with UConn assistant coach Kimani Young, whose relationship with Gaffney's father dates back to their grade school days in New York.

"It definitely was a factor," Gaffney said. "He's been basically family. He's definitely family now. I know him and trust him. He was honest with me; so was the rest of the staff."

While Gaffney expects to play both guard positions this season for Westtown, he sees his future as a point guard.

Now that he's made his college choice, Gaffney can turn his full attention to preparing for his upcoming season at Westtown.

Gaffney is looking forward to helping put UConn back on the map.

He announced his commitment on his Twitter account Monday and posted pictures of him wearing a UConn basketball jersey with the number 12.

"Big day," Gaffney said. "It's exciting."

The Huskies will likely focus on frontcourt players to fill their remaining three scholarship openings.
