Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan share Sunday bill at Sun

Patrick Simmons, Marc Russo, Tom Johnston and John McFee of The Doobie Brothers (Barry Brecheisen, Invision/AP)

Simon & Garfunkel split up years ago. If one or the other is on the road these days, the bill is either "An Evening with Art Garfunkel" or "The Paul Simon Farewell Tour" or whatever. Hall & Oates are still together — and hit Foxwoods in November, as a matter of fact — but I can only assume that, if they broke up, we wouldn't see any more "Hall & Oates" shows. It would be "John Oates Plays the Kate" (as he did a few months ago) or "Daryl Hall — One Night Only."

My point? I guess I find it odd that Steely Dan — Walter Becker and Donald Fagen — are still "Steely Dan." Becker died last winter and so, to me, Steely Dan can't really go on anymore, right? It was an equal partnership in virtually every way.

And yet "Steely Dan" performs Sunday in the Mohegan Sun Arena on a double bill with the Doobie Brothers. I suspect part of this is marketing as in, "Steely Dan" fills arenas; solo Donald Fagen fills theaters.

Let's compromise: How about Steely Don?

I suppose the important thing is that Fagen will have the usual excellent road band, and the set list will span the entirety of the Hall of Fame career he had with his partner, Walter Becker. Oh, and yes, there are lawsuits between the Becker estate and Fagen doing business as Steely Dan.

But don't overlook the Doobies in all this. Man, they've got an incredible list of still-catchy singles — not to mention long-time drummer Ed Toth is an East Lyme native. My only beef with the group? They NEVER play my favorite song live. That would be the title track to "Toulouse Street," the best-ever tune about New Orleans not written by a native.

Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $49-$89; 1-800-745-3000.
