ECSO opens new season in New London's Garde Arts Center Saturday

    Solomiya Ivakhi (solomiyaivakhi.com)

Toshiyuki Shimada inagurates his 10th year as conductor/creative director of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra when he steps onstage Saturday night for the start of the 2019-20 season — the organization's 73rd campaign.

Titled "New Season, New World," the concert features "Discover the Wild" by Connecticut native and Grammy winner Kenneth Fuchs; Tchaikovsky's Concerto for Violin in D major, Op. 35; and Dvorak's Symphony no 9 in E minor, Op. 95/B 178 "From the New World."

The date's featured soloist is violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv, making her ECSO debut on the Tchaikovsky masterpiece.

And the Dvorak work is particularly resonant because it's the piece Shimada conducted a decade ago for his ECSO audition. This should be a special night with plenty of well-deserved excitement and energy.

See a season-preview interview with Shimada in Friday's Daybreak section.

"New Season, New World," Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London; $35-$65; (860) 443-2876.
