Beach Boys to headline free pre-bowl concert

The Beach Boys and English rock band Bad Company are headlining a free concert outside the Superdome the night before next month's New Orleans Bowl game.

It'll be The Beach Boys' second time in New Orleans this year. The California band celebrated its 50th anniversary with a reunion tour that included a stop at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in April. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and has a decades-long career of hits that include "Good Vibrations," "Surfer Girl," "I Get Around" and "Help Me Rhonda."

Bad Company was formed in the early 1970s, and its hits include the group's namesake single, "Bad Company" and "Feel Like Makin' Love."

The free concert will take place in Champion's Square, the public open-air space outside the Superdome, on Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m.

The New Orleans Bowl game is Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. That's when the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will represent the Sun Belt Conference at the bowl for the second year in a row. The Ragin' Cajuns will play either Rice or East Carolina, depending on the outcome of this Saturday's Conference USA championship game.

Billy Ferrante, executive director of the New Orleans Bowl, says the weekend will be a celebration of the city's love of music and sports. He also announced that R+L Carriers shipping service, the official sponsor of the New Orleans Bowl, has extended its sponsorship of the event for five years.
