    Hygienic’s 44th Salon des Independants

On Saturday, the curtain rises on Hygienic Art’s annual Salon des Independants — a midwinter, all-are-welcome gallery exhibition that generates a whole weekend’s worth of fun across downtown New London.

This will be the 44th edition of the show, which means that some of the artwork displayed during the first year is now old enough and sufficiently revered that it’s been given its own slot in art history textbooks. For example, there are styles such as Realism, Impressionism, Romanticism, Pop Art, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Pointillism, Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Dadaism — and now Stuff That Originated at the Hygienicism.

This means YOU need to get your piece of artwork ready to hang Saturday morning when the doors open Saturday at 8 a.m. As always, the original principles apply: one piece per artist and there is no judge, no jury, no censorship and no fees. The show runs through Feb. 11, so, basically, you and your work will be a star for 15 days!

    Salon des Independants XLIV, 7 p.m. Saturday-Feb. 9 (art drop-off, registration and hanging 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday), normal gallery hours noon-7 p.m. Tues.-Sat. and noon-4 p.m. Sun., 79 Bank St., New London; free; hygienic.org.
