Local roundup: UConn’s Bueckers begins rehab process following knee surgery

Storrs – UConn announced Tuesday that women’s basketball star Paige Bueckers has already begun the rehab process for his injured left knee.

The junior guard, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during a pick-up game last Monday, underwent successful surgery on Friday, according to UConn release, and began her rehab on Saturday.

Bueckers, who will miss the 2022-23 season, “will be regularly monitored by the UConn medical staff throughout her recovery,” the release said.

    ECML playoffs

    • Axel DeJesus had a key two-run single in the sixth inning scoring Anthony Carambot and Chris Gibb as the Sonics defeated the Padres 4-2 in the division round of the Eastern Connecticut Major League playoffs on Monday night at Bidwell Field in Groton.

The Sonics, the 2021 ECML champion, advanced to the best-of-three ECML World Series against the regular-season champion Clippers. Game 1 was played Tuesday night with Game 2 set for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and a deciding Game 3, if necessary will be Thursday, also at 6:30.

In the win over the Padres, Saxon Hebert went the distance, scattering six hits while walking only one batter and striking out nine. Hendrick Khoury pitched well in defeat for the Padres, allowing seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Juan Cruz and Dan Pierce each had RBI doubles for the Sonics while Robbie DelaCruz and Cam McGugan had two hits apiece for the Padres.
